COLUMBIA (WOLO): A COVID-19 vaccination site in West Columbia is setting the stage for private companies to get more involved in the state’s fight against the virus.  Governor Henry McMaster visited Nephron Pharmaceuticals and Dominion Energy’s vaccination site Wednesday.

From restoring power, to restoring confidence in South Carolinians- that’s how Dominion Energy’s Keller Kissam described their COVID-19 vaccination site Wednesday.

“Now that we have set the stage, what we want to do is spread the word. This is a great site, it comes through quickly and efficiently,” said Kissam.

The all-volunteer drive-thru site was made possible through a partnership with Nephron Pharmaceuticals.

“The fact that we have the refrigeration, freezers, and the facilities to be able to receive, maintain, and organize the efforts felt very empowering to be able to support our community,” said Chief Clinical Officer of Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Stephanie Simmonds.

The site is located on Dominion Energy property off Interstate 77, exit 2. It’s currently able to vaccinate 120 to 150 people a day, and they’re expanding.

Nephron CEO Lou Kennedy said, “the goal is to have 300. We just got another load of 1500 first doses just yesterday.”

Governor McMaster says it illustrates what can be done when South Carolinians get to work. He’s hopeful it will encourage others to do the same.

“The government is not big enough and never will be big enough to do all that needs to be done. That is why everything we do, we rely on private businesses, private citizens, those who want to lend a hand and jump in and get to work, and that’s exactly what Dominion and Nephron are doing here,” said Governor McMaster.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A vaccine location in South Carolina is delivering 130 doses a day with no waiting and wants to expand its capacity to 300 shots per day.

The West Columbia site, ran by Nephron Pharmaceuticals and Dominion Energy, was toured by Governor Henry McMaster today.

McMaster says the vaccine site is running efficiently because private businesses are working together.

“This is the answer,” McMaster says. “There is no way there will be enough sites to vaccinate everyone who wants to be vaccinated without having sites like this, companies like this, private individuals stepping up and playing a part.”

McMaster says the government needs the help of private businesses.

“The government is not big enough and never will be big enough to do all that needs to be done. That’s why in everything we do, we depend on private businesses, private citizens, people who want to lend a hand to get to work,” McMaster says.

Lou Kennedy, Nephron Pharmaceuticals CEO, says they want to help relieve the strain on hospital workers.

“It’s a no-brainer that we can do this and be a help to the already hard-working folks at the hospital,” Kennedy says. “They can help the sick patients and we can help the well patients. That takes some stress and strain from them.”

Nephron Pharmaceuticals Chief Clinical Officer Stephanie Simmonds says putting her scrubs back on has been the most fulfilling professional thing she has done.

“It was great to come to the front line and really make a difference, and with so many people feeling scared and vulnerable right now that we are able to ease their stress and complete the process for them with no pain,” Simmonds says.

Nephron and Dominion’s vaccination site helps people through the entire process of getting vaccinated. The location helps with registering people for their first shot and setting up their second.

“A lot of the elderly folks aren’t able to get through walk-in, it’s very difficult for them, there are long wait times,” Simmonds says. “Here it is. Quick and easy for them. They don’t need to get out.”

Eligible South Carolina residents have a new location in Lexington County to receive COVID-19 vaccinations — and they don’t have to get out of their cars.

Nephron Pharmaceuticals partnered with Dominion Energy to launch a drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination site in West Columbia, Nephron officials said in a news release.

Starting Monday, vaccinations are being offered by appointment only at the site, which is planned to operate Monday-Friday, officials said. Appointments must be scheduled through the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The drive-thru is located on Dominion Energy property off exit 2 of Interstate 77, which is the exit for the 12th Street Extension. Signs direct drivers toward the vaccination site, officials said.

Nephron registered nurses and pharmacists will administer vaccinations, with assistance from Nephron CLIA-certified diagnostics lab employees, according to the release.

Post and Courier: Lexington County companies team up to vaccinate seniors against COVID-19

WEST COLUMBIA — Nephron Pharmaceuticals CEO Lou Kennedy watched proudly from her office window as a company security guard rushed out to help a woman with a hot pink walker from her vehicle into the West Columbia drug company’s headquarters.

Having found the location on the state Department of Health and Environmental Control’s website, the woman was there to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

Nephron, along with Cayce-based Dominion Energy and two Lexington County road sign companies, Stay Alert Safety Services and Optec Displays, are donating time and services to put on a free drive-thru vaccine clinic. Eligible participants, age 65 or older, must have an appointment to receive a shot.

“I’m so proud we can do this,” Kennedy said.

While the vaccine itself is free, providers are legally able to bill people or their insurance for the doctor or pharmacy visit. Nephron is not charging.

With about 30 nurses on staff and almost as many doctors of pharmacy, the West Columbia drug maker applied for the certification needed to give the shots and administered its first 500 doses to Lexington County seniors inside its building over the week of Feb. 1.

It has 1,000 more doses to start giving out on Feb. 8, this time without people having to get out of their vehicles in an effort to make recipients more comfortable, Kennedy said.

When she first had the idea, she called Keller Kissam, president of electric operations at Dominion Energy South Carolina, to ask if they could use the power company’s vehicle turnaround area. Dominion’s headquarters a 10-minute drive from Nephron.
“Keller didn’t even hesitate,” Kennedy said. “It was ‘What can we do? How do we help?’ You talk about community spirit.”

In addition to the drive-thru space, Dominion is providing power to the site to power the computers needed to make appointments for recipients’ second doses. Stay Alert, Optec, as well as the town and county of Lexington are providing signage.

Those wishing to receive a vaccine from Nephron can go online to DHEC’s website in order to sign up for an appointment.

ICYMI – News 19 WLTX: “We’re going to be ready”

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — Nephron Pharmaceuticals is hoping to help with vaccine distribution in South Carolina.

The company hopes to expand, and CEO Lou Kennedy said part of their expansion includes a new wing that would allow them to fill vaccines.

According to the company, they do not currently have a vaccine partner, but they are working with different makers to help with distribution.

If they are able to find a partner, Kennedy said this could make a huge difference for South Carolinians.

“What my hope and plan is, is to get this thing finished and as we see new mutations or variants start to emerge they might want to say well we don’t want to stop production of this, but we would like to do some different things or maybe there’s a new version,” Kennedy said. “And, so I just want to be ready in the event someone needs extra filling capabilities. We’re going to be ready.”

The goal is to have construction of the new facility completed next month. Once the facility is completed and finds a partner – Nephron could produce and fill 8 million vials per month by September, according to Nephron.

But while construction is on going, Nephron said they are helping combat the pandemic in other ways.

When the pandemic began, Nephron began providing COVID-19 testing. Since then, they have made sanitizer, test kits, and drugs to help with symptoms related to the virus.

She said while they wait to partner with a vaccine company, they want to continue helping fight the pandemic.

“COVID-19 testing was early on a must for us, and now we’re happy to test student athletes, the people from the university, folks from local schools, the community, other businesses located near us, and even all over the state,” Kennedy said.
